A villain is an opponent. We use this term for literary and dramatic purposes. It is not related to wheter someone is or not the protagonist. You will always be the villain for your opponents, but not always the protagonist.
A selection is the combination of all pages and conjurations that a player chooses on a turn.
The power of a selection is the sum of the power of its pages and conjurations.
You can see all the types of bookmarks that exist here:
If a page has power ?, that power is treated as 0 unless an ability states otherwise.
A page's power can only be negative during the activation phase, but never during combat.
Example ✦ If a page's power is -3 during the activation phase, that page's power becomes 0 the moment the combat phase starts.
Easy. That villain has to pay a skull cost. That means dthey must destroy a page of their book that isn’t already destroyed and is immediately before or after a page in their selection.
Example ✦ If a villain has page 50 of their book selected and loses 💀 to an ability, they must either destroy the previous page (48) or the next one (52). Now imagine those two Pages are already destroyed. In that case, the villain must destroy page 46 or 54.
PD ✦ If that villain has several pages selected, they can destroy the page before or after any of them.
You can't destroy a page that is already destroyed
If you destroy a page that has a bookmark, that bookmark still exists. Although in most cases, you won't be able to use it.
Example ✦ If you destroy a page with a summoning bookmark, the bookmark remains there, but you won't be able to summon that page because it is destroyed.
If, after selecting a page, you can no longer pay its full cost, you can still play that page by paying the remaining cost.
Example ✦ You select a page with a cost of ❤💀⚡⚡. Then, a villain activates their selection first and causes you to lose all your ⚡. When you play your page, you must pay the remaining cost. In this case: ❤💀.
If you roll a chapter where all pages are destroyed or cannot be selected, lose ❤ and roll for your chapter again.

Play with emblems
The most wild thing about Duelbooks is playing with Emblems, powerful bookmark characters with abilities. Each player chooses theirs, and the game and the punch-up begin!
